Emergency Closing Of Schools / Adverse Weather Conditions

The safety of students and staff is of prime concern.  A school may be closed whenever there is a possible safety hazard.  When bus transportation in a PRSD region is cancelled , schools are closed for all students in that region.   Once school bus runs and classes are cancelled, they will be cancelled for the whole day. School buses that don’t run in the morning won’t run in the afternoon.

  • A decision to close schools and cancel buses is made by the Superintendent or Chairperson and will be announced on the Divisional Website (http://www.prsdmb.ca/cancellations.htm) as well as on the following following radio stations:

CBC 990 AM
CANAM 105.1 FM
CKSB – CBC French
CLEAR 102.3 FM
CFRY 920 AM
BOB 99.9 FM
CJOB 680 AM
HOT 103 FM
CFAM 950 AM
CITI – TV Winnipeg
Eagle 93.5 FM
CTV – TV Winnipeg

  • All efforts will be made to annouce school cancellations prior to 7:30 am.

  • The division's decision to cancel buses and close schools is based on variety of factors including: temperature, weather conditions, amount of precipitation, snow, ice and visibility, highway closures, road conditions...

(Bus transportation is cancelled at -45°C.)

NOTE:  If school is not cancelled, bus drivers have the discretionary responsibility not to drive a hazardous route and will notify parents

Should adverse weather conditions arrive during the school day, schools will remain open.

  • Students will not be transported or sent home early.

  • Schools will be notified by 3:00 p.m. if buses will not operate.

  • Each school has a billet plan in place and parents will be notified.

  • The emergency storm closure billeting procedure at Miami School is as follows:

Miami School Emergency Storm Billet Plan:

  •  No student (bus or town) will be allowed to leave the school until parents have been contacted and/or their billet has been confirmed.
  •  Prior to town students and their billets walking home from the school, the following steps must be followed:

                    a) The parent/billet has been contacted to confirm that they believe it is appropriate and safe for the student(s) to walk home in the current weather

                        conditions.

                    b) Student(s) s are appropriately dressed for the weather conditions

                    c) Students are walking in groups.  (No student should be walking alone)

  • At the start of each school year, all bus families are required to complete a billeting form indicating an appropriate plan/billet for their child(ren) in the event that buses cannot return students home at the end of the school day.  (A billet summary list of this information will be housed in the office).
  • Staff will contact parents/billets using the billet summary list to confirm pick-up and/or walking arrangements. (Parents/billets of town students will be encouraged to try to pick-up students rather than have them walk whenever possible).
  • All students (bus and town) will be directed to report to a supervised location (homerooms Grade K-7, Gym, Grades 8-12) and will remain there until written authorization from the office is received.
  • Parents/Billets arriving at the school to pick-up students will begin by reporting to the Band Room to sign in and receive a student release form to be given to the supervising teacher(s)
